White Paper: Small-Group Reading Instruction
and Mastery Learning
Coll Classroom Nov.png

While whole-class instruction is useful for building knowledge and for reading comprehension, it is markedly less effective — and less equitable —  for developing word recognition skills.

To ensure success, educators must implement two research-supported practices: small-group instruction and mastery learning.

This white paper unpacks the research and explores how small-group, mastery-based instruction is a crucial missing ingredient in many core reading curricula.

  • Yes, a conference can lead to sustained learning. Here’s how. The Learning Professional - A team of educators used Learning Forward’s Annual Conference as the cornerstone of their yearlong professional learning strategy. How did they do it? They had a plan in place for before, during, and immediately after the conference. They also designed a longer-term follow-up process that included live virtual touchpoints, a shared asynchronous digital space, and embedded 10-minute professional learning conversations into every team meeting. By organizing their learning and revisiting it, the light from their new ideas continued to shine. Read More

  • Try it on: Less talking, more impact - The Bright Morning podcast - Elena Aguilar focuses on the skill of speaking as little as possible in her latest podcast for coaches. "Zaretta Hammond, who is my friend, used to say all the time, whoever is doing the talking is doing the learning," Aguilar said. "And I love that. I don't know if she came up with that, but whoever is doing the talking is doing the learning. In a coaching conversation, how do you give your client even more opportunities to talk and to do their own learning?" Click here to Listen

  • Here is what's needed to improve measuring teacher professional learningResearch Partnership for Professional Learning- Research Partnership for Professional Learning (RPPL) just released a white paper, Measuring Teacher Professional Learning: Why It's Hard and What We Can Do About It.
