Frequently Asked Questions
According to Learning Forward, professional learning is defined as:
“A comprehensive, sustained, and evidence-based approach to improving educators’ effectiveness and results for all students.”
This definition emphasizes that professional learning is not a one-time workshop or isolated event. Instead, it is an ongoing process that is intentionally designed to strengthen educator practice over time.
High-quality professional learning:
Focuses on improving student outcomes through stronger instruction
Is sustained and embedded into daily practice, rather than delivered as stand-alone sessions
Uses evidence and data to guide decisions and measure impact
Engages educators in active, collaborative learning experiences
In practice, professional learning includes activities such as collaborative team learning, coaching, mentoring, and facilitated sessions that build knowledge and skills. When designed effectively, it leads to meaningful changes in educator practice and measurable improvements in student learning.

For certification renewal, most educators must complete between 150 and 200 Continuing Professional Education (CPE) hours every five years. This can vary based on the type of certification. Presenting at professional development can also count toward these hours. You can find specific requirements on the TEA Website at this link.
